From the Director:
Women make a difference! Women have played an important role in making the US the great country that it is. Their efforts have improved civil rights, medicine, technology, laws and many other parts of our lives. Without them, the US would be much different than it is today. BLACK WOMEN WALKING shines a spotlight on 12 women who have made history in America. Let their stories as freedom fighters, educators, writers & fine artists, performing artists, athletes, and scientists & healers inspire you to make a difference!
For these stories are not merely about Black women for Black people; they are stories about the power and resilience of the human spirit, which is characteristic of all people. Most of these narratives are not pretty ones. These women’s lives have not been idyllic, so you’ll find no fairy tale here. Yet each in its own way is a success story, a heroic story that resulted from facing difficulties, testing limits, coping with disappointments, and finding strength in the struggle. While most have lived in different periods of history and were faced with different kinds of obstacles, they all share a common heritage and a common goal; to improve the lives of their people. Stories shape how we see ourselves and everyone around us. As storytellers, we have the power to not only uplift and inspire, but also to champion the spectrum of voices in our world.
